Following the passing of David Duckham at the age of 76, the English rugby union has lost one of its most iconic names.
Duckham’s mazy, long-striding running stood out in the 1973 Barbarians match, aside from Gareth Edwards’ sensational early try. Welsh supporters christened him “Dai” because they recognized him as one of their own.
Duckham spent his whole club career with Coventry before making his England debut against Ireland in 1969. He was a center and a winger who formed an excellent midfield partnership with fellow Lion John Spencer.
His ability to twist and dodge opponents set him unique at a time when English rugby was not known for its aggressive openness.
By the time he was injured against Scotland at Twickenham in 1976, he had become England’s most-capped three-quarter and their second all-time try-scorer, trailing only Cyril Lowe.
In a statement, his previous club declared it was “very sorry” to learn of the news and regarded him as “perhaps the ‘greatest’ ever Coventry player”. Duckham will be commemorated by the club before their match against Jersey on Saturday.
