Following the passing of David Duckham at the age of 76, the English rugby union has lost one of its most memorable names.

The blond-haired Duckham, who was one of the most gifted backs of his period, will always be remembered for his incredible sprinting during the illustrious Cardiff match between the Barbarians and New Zealand in 1973.

Duckham was a major component of the 1971 British & Irish Lions team that won a historic series against the All Blacks. He played 36 times for England and scored 10 tries.

He died on Monday night at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, where he had been the lone English player in the Barbarians back line that had defeated New Zealand 50 years earlier this month.

Duckham also contributed 11 tries throughout 16 games during the 1971 Lions trip. He scored six tries in one of the midweek games against West Coast/Buller, but it was the way he played that made him stand out.
