A special piece of art was commissioned to commemorate the announcement that David Bowie has been crowned Britain’s most influential artist of the past 50 years for his ability to transcend music, film, and fashion.

Prior to Oscar-winning director Sir Steve McQueen of 12 Years a Slave and Doctor Who revivalist Russell T Davies of It’s A Sin, The Starman guitarist topped the Sky Arts list of 50 significant musicians.

Along with performers Michaela Coel and Steve Coogan, musicians the Spice Girls, Sir Elton John, Stormzy, and Boy George were among others featured.

The roster also included the street artist Banksy, the director Sir Ridley Scott, and the fashion designers Alexander McQueen and Dame Vivienne Westwood.

In addition to the artist Tracey Emin and the rock band Skunk Anansie’s lead singer Skin, who was Glastonbury’s first black headliner in 1999, comedians Ricky Gervais and Victoria Wood also made an appearance.

Renowned artists from the visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, music, film, and television are honored on the list.

The TV channel Sky Arts challenged the judging panel, which was chaired by broadcaster and DJ Lauren Laverne, to compile the list.

Bowie was named the winner for his ability to cross multiple mediums.
