Darnell was brought up in Kansas City, Missouri. He left to play basketball for Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, and Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado.
Although he has two degrees in business, his interests lie in entertainment and sports. Kirkwood sustained a career-altering injury after playing two years of professional basketball in Denmark (along with modeling and music production). He made the decision to attack entertainment head-on as a result. He signed contracts right away with Boca Talent and Wilhelmina Miami in Miami, Florida. He began appearing in TV, movies, commercials, serving as a spokesman, hosting, doing interviews, modeling, and playing music at this point. Currently, Kirkwood is a SAG actor and fine artist who resides in Los Angeles.
