Darlene Love’s voice is widely acknowledged as one of the most distinctive and potent in popular music history. Her hit single “He’s a Rebel” in 1962 brought her worldwide attention. She struggled to achieve the same level of success in her solo career as she did as a backup performer over the course of more than five decades.

She has backed Sam Cooke, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, Aretha Franklin, and The Rolling Stones as well as performed with them.

In July 1941, Love was born. She had four siblings and a minister father. She began singing at a young age in a church choir in Hawthorne, California. She joined “The Blossoms,” a little-known girl group, in 1959 while she was still in high school. Gloria Jones, Fanita Barrett, and Annette Williams made up the band, which was signed to Capitol Records and worked as background singers on sessions.
