Aflao residents risk their lives to scoop petrol from an accident tanker

Some residents in Aflao, in the Volta Region of Ghana, are putting themselves up for death as they fight each other to scoop petrol from an accident fuel tanker.

The accident, according to a journalist Della Russel, who was also travelling on the road at that time, said it happened 600 meters away from the St. Catherine Girls School in Aflao.

Instead of calling the ambulance and the police service to get the track back on the road and to avert any danger, some of the residents and bystanders trooped to the scene of the accident to siphon into their gallons and barrels.

Children, men, women, and hawkers are all at the scene, either catching a glimpse or scooping the fuel.

The lives of all these people are in danger because with any little fire ignition, all of them will be burnt without recognition. This will pose a danger for the owners of the telecommunication tower seen around the accident scene.

“This fuel tanker was involved in an accident some 600 meters away from the St Catherine Girls School on the Aflao road in the Volta Region and we saw some residents scooping the fuel into gallons and blue barrels at the accident scene.”

“I couldn’t get other pictures because our driver was so afraid there could be a fire spark and therefore drove off quickly. If there is any fire service station is in the area which I presumed may be under the Dabala District (If there’s any such District), officials should please get to the scene before any disaster occurs,” Della Russel wrote.
