Daniel Reed Crenshaw is a former United States Navy SEAL commander who has served as the United States Representative for Texas’s 2nd congressional district since 2019. Parts of northern and western Houston are included in the district. He belongs to the Republican Party.

Crenshaw joined the US Navy and served in SEAL Team 3 during the Afghan War, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. During his third tour, he was injured in battle and lost his right eye to an improvised explosive device. He worked as a legislative assistant for Rep. Pete Sessions before being elected to Congress in the 2018 midterm elections to replace the retiring Ted Poe.

He is a Methodist and hosts Hold These Truths, a podcast he launched in February 2020.

Crenshaw lost his right vision in 2012, on his third deployment, after he was injured by an IED blast in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The bomb shattered his eye, and he needed surgery to salvage his left eye’s eyesight. After his injuries, he stayed in the Navy for four years, doing his fourth and fifth tours of duty in Bahrain and South Korea.

In April 2021, the retina in his left eye began to detach, necessitating emergency surgery. He anticipated to remain nearly blind for roughly a month as he recovered. “I don’t have a ‘good eye,’ but I have half a good eye,” he explained.
