Dan was born on May 9, 1992, in Blyth, Northumberland, England.
Burn grew up in Blyth, Northumberland, idolizing Alan Shearer and supporting Newcastle United.

Burn was released by Newcastle United when he was 11 years old and went on to play for local clubs New Hartley, Blyth Town, and Blyth Spartans. When a Darlington scout saw him playing for Blyth Spartans when he was 16, he signed professional terms with the club on July 1, 2009.

On September 25, 2012, Burn signed a one-month youth loan with League One club Yeovil Town.

Four days later, he made his debut against Preston North End.

On August 9, 2018, Burn agreed to a four-year contract with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee. He was loaned back to Wigan Athletic until January 2019.

He continues to play for Brighton to this day.
