Damongo about 400 NPP members resign over minister’s alleged meddling in Chieftaincy affairs

About four hundred members of the Gimbe family from the Dange’s gate in the Savannah Region have taken a bold step by resigning from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This decision comes as a protest against what they perceive as the biased actions of the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jebril, in the handling of the Damongo Chieftaincy issues.

During a press conference held in Damongo on Sunday, April 22, 2024, the group, comprising members with positions ranging from the branch level to the regional level, made their resignation official. The spokesperson for the group, Dolopewura Darman Isaac, openly criticized the NPP, citing instances of interference and intimidation by the Savannah Regional Minister in the Chieftaincy affairs of the Municipality.

“We, the entire family of Gimbe from the Dange Gate, spearheaded by Dolipewura, Bakari, Sulemana, Damongo Wuriche, and Hajia Amina Bampe Wuriche, hereby announce the termination of our membership from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Damongo, Savannah Region, with immediate effect,” proclaimed Mr. Dolopewura Dramani.

The group emphasized that their decision was not made lightly and was primarily motivated by the ongoing involvement of the Savannah Regional Minister in the Chieftaincy matters in Damongo. They specifically highlighted an incident where a young man named Chief Sakare Jakpa from the Lemu gate allegedly enskinned himself as Kulasewura without the rightful entitlement from the Dange’s gate, with the apparent support of Mr. Saeed Muhazu.

The disgruntled family members firmly stated, “We have evidence that the illegal enskinment received the full endorsement of the Savannah Regional Minister Saeed Muhazu, as witnessed by a joint police and military team, including the commanders from both the Savannah Regional and West Gonja Municipal Police.”

Furthermore, the group raised concerns about the Regional Minister’s impartiality in the matter, questioning his role as the Chairman of the Savannah Regional Security Council and his alleged involvement in the Chieftaincy affairs. They called on the security forces to focus on their mandated duties and treat all residents fairly and equally.

In response to the allegations, the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu, maintained his innocence in a telephone interview, stating, “My hands are clean. I’m a father figure for all, and my primary objective is to ensure the safety and peace of the region.”

The family’s withdrawal from the NPP does not signal an end to the tensions between Dangepe and Chief Sakare, with the alleged assistance of the Regional Minister.

The Gimbe family members remain steadfast in their quest for justice and transparency in the Chieftaincy affairs of Damongo, emphasizing the need for security forces to uphold their duties without bias.
