Whitnell won the English Golf Union Order of Merit with ease and was regarded as England’s top amateur in 2009.
He competed for Great Britain and Ireland in the 2009 Walker Cup, although it took him 11 years after becoming a pro in 2009 to obtain a full European Tour card. He participated in the 2012 Open Championship after passing the local qualifying round and making the cut.
Whitnell has three times tied for fourth place on the European Tour, at the 2021 Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open, the 2020 Betfred British Masters, and the 2009 Alfred Dunhill Championship.
After two opening rounds of 68 at the 2021 Cazoo Classic, Whitnell shared the lead going into the weekend. However, two closing rounds of 72 caused him to tie for 13th place.
