Incumbent MP for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, suffered defeat in the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary that took place on Saturday, April 13.
The results showed that she garnered 152 votes, while Christopher Arthur emerged victorious with 240 votes to become the party’s parliamentary candidate.
Other candidates in the primary included Ben Yamoah, who polled 221 votes, Yawson Otoo with 168 votes, and Joseph Afrankwa with 155 votes.
Supporters of Christopher Arthur were in high spirits and seen jubilating after the announcement of the election results. The voting took place at a single centre located at Otabilkrom Astroturf in Agona Swedru.
Cynthia Morrison had previously secured the seat in the 2016 general elections, winning by obtaining 32,770 votes out of 56,878 votes cast, which represented 58.03 percent of the total valid votes. She also contested in the 2020 elections as the NPP parliamentary candidate and succeeded in securing a second four-year term by polling 30,513 votes out of a total of 59,193 valid votes cast.
Her main contenders in the 2020 elections were Paul Ofori-Amoah of the National Democratic Congress, who garnered 27,673 votes, and independent candidate Ishmael Kofi Tekyi Turkson, who received 1,007 votes.
