Curtis Mayfield who lived from June 3, 1942, to December 26, 1999, was a singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer from the United States.
During the late 50s and early 60s civil rights movement, he initially found fame with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group The Impressions.

He joined the Impressions as a member of the Roosters in 1956 and worked with producer Johnny Pate. He co-wrote and performed on Jerry Butler’s For Your Precious Love and Come Back My Love, and later sang on He Will Break Your Heart alongside him.
The trio signed with ABC Records, which was a Warner Bros. Records subsidiary at the time.
Mayfield was part of the first of a new generation of mainstream black R&B performers and composers to fuse social commentary in their work. This type of music resonated with many from the African-American communities in America in the 60s and 70s.
