Darnell Carlton, better known by his stage name Crunchy Black, is an American rapper and hype man. He was born on August 20, 1974. From its inception until 2006, he was a committed member of the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia. Three 6 Mafia and Frayser Boy won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006. Due to financial disagreements concerning his desire to advance his solo career, Crunchy left Three 6 Mafia. On My Own, Black’s debut solo album, was released on September 19, 2006.

Crunchy Black stated that he was raised by his aunt and grandmother and said he didn’t meet his father until he was about 15 years old. Crunchy Black mentioned meeting DJ Paul during their time in high school and related how he battled twins he overheard planning against DJ Paul when the DJ was spinning a party that Crunchy attended. He claims that they have been amicable ever since.
