A luxury cruise ship has saved 68 migrants who were attempting to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in a fishing boat that had become stranded in rough seas, as reported by Spanish authorities and the cruise operator. Tragically, six individuals lost their lives during this incident.
The Canary Islands have become a primary entry point to Spain for undocumented migrants from Africa in recent years, with the journey being one of the most perilous. According to Migration rights group Walking Borders, nearly 5,000 migrants perished at sea on this route in the first five months of 2024.
The bulk carrier Philipp Oldendorff first spotted the distressed boat 440 nautical miles south of Tenerife on Wednesday. The ship provided initial assistance to the migrants, and the Insignia cruise ship, owned by Miami-based Oceania Cruises, was redirected to the area for the rescue operation.
Despite adverse weather conditions, the Insignia managed to rescue 68 survivors and recovered three bodies from the boat. To aid in the search for the remaining two bodies, the cruise ship deployed a locating device before continuing on its voyage.
The Insignia, which can accommodate up to 670 passengers, is currently on a 180-day global trip that commenced in January. A spokesperson for Oceania Cruises emphasized the company’s commitment to the safety of all individuals at sea, highlighting their provision of medical assistance, food, drinks, clothing, and a secure place to rest for the rescued migrants.
The Spanish Coast Guard dispatched a vessel from the Canary Islands to rendezvous with the Insignia and facilitate the search for the shipwreck. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of maritime safety in protecting the lives of seafarers and those in distress at sea.
