An Accra Circuit Court remanded a 30-year-old man who was charged with embezzling GH₵292,534 from his employer into police custody.

It is reported that Henry Hoyle informed the police that he had taken the money to care for his sick mother. However, his attorney told the court that the defendant had returned a portion of the money.

On the basis of Hoyle’s own plea, the court presided over by Isaac Oheneba Kuffour found him guilty but postponed his punishment until the money the accused had returned was reconciled.

The case will now take place on February 14, 2024. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Evans Kesse, the complainant is the head of the Human Resource Department of a company named withheld that sells electronic gadgets and clothing online.

The prosecution claimed Hoyle was a former employee. According to the prosecution, on May 1, 2018, the accused was employed by the company as a finance associate, responsible for receiving and recording cash transactions, preparing cash received reports, cross-checking and validating, and clearing various “run-sheet deliveries.”

According to the prosecution, the accused also handles customer service refunds, among other things. The prosecutor stated that in May 2021, the company conducted a random internal financial check and discovered that the accused had been stealing funds from the company.

According to the report, the accused transferred the stolen funds to his two personal mobile money numbers for personal use. The prosecution claims that when Hoyle was confronted with the findings, he admitted “siphoning funds” from the company’s mobile money account.

According to the court, the accused was arrested and handed over to police. During interrogation, the prosecutor claimed that Hoyle admitted the crime and stated that he used the money to “cure his sick mother.” The prosecution continued, “Accused transferred the money into other accounts, disbursing the booty.”
