Patterson participated in football, basketball, and track at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Jimmy Wallace served as his coach. He led his team to the State Class 4A Division II championship game as a senior in 2008, hauling in 75 passes for 944 yards and 18 touchdowns while earning an All-state selection. At Northwestern High School, Patterson also lettered in track and field for three years. Despite not playing football, he spent a portion of 2009 starting a post-graduate year at North Carolina Tech Preparatory Christian Academy. He left before the spring semester to enroll at Hutchinson Community College.
