TV personality and Co-host of TV3’s New Day, Cookie Tee, along with Gospel singer, Celestine Donkor, have come under fire for their light-hearted banter about Ewe surnames during a recent show on TV3.
During an episode of Today’s Woman with Cookie Tee, Celestine shared that she had once prayed for a husband without a ‘heavy’ Ewe surname, a sentiment that Cookie Tee, who has Ewe heritage, also echoed. However, their casual remarks sparked criticism from some viewers who felt that the comments were disrespectful to the Ewe tribe.
In response to the backlash, Cookie Tee addressed the issue on the New Day Show, clarifying that the comments were intended as lighthearted humor and not as a mockery of the Ewe community. She expressed regret for any offense caused and extended a sincere apology to the Ewe community and all Ghanaians.
Celestine Donkor also took to social media to apologize, emphasizing that the jokes were made in jest and were not meant to offend anyone. She acknowledged that the response to the comments highlighted the need for greater sensitivity in public conversations and expressed regret for any hurt caused.
