Former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was reportedly stabbed multiple times in prison during a fight with another inmate.
The 59-year-old Nassar, who was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for sexually molesting gymnasts, is currently in stable condition at a hospital after the attack on Sunday.
According to a prison union leader, Nassar suffered two stab wounds in the neck, two in the back, and six in the chest, resulting in a collapsed lung.
The incident occurred at the United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida, where Nassar is serving his sentence.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that responding staff immediately provided life-saving measures, and the injured inmate was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
No staff or other inmates were harmed in the altercation. Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting athletes while working with the USA Gymnastics program and Michigan State University. Over 330 women and girls have accused him of sexual abuse.
Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney have testified about surviving Nassar’s abuse.
An investigation into the FBI’s handling of the case revealed failures and cover-ups, leading to lawsuits against the agency. USA Gymnastics and Michigan State have also reached settlements with Nassar’s survivors.
