On January 6, 1964, Colin Murray Cowherd was born in Aberdeen, Washington, to parents Charles and Patricia Cowherd. He is a citizen of the United States and a member of the White ethnic group. He grew up in Grayland, Washington, with his older sister, Marlene Cowherd.

Following high school, Cowherd studied to be an announcer for baseball games at Eastern Washington University, where he also watched game broadcasts. Originally, Cowherd called play-by-play for the San Diego Padres, a baseball team based in the United States.

Later, he worked for NBC affiliate KVBC as a sports director in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the recipient of five Nevada Sportscaster of the Year honors while he worked there. Moreover, Sports Illustrated named him the 2005 Radio Personality of the Year.
