Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American lawyer and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
President George H. W. Bush nominated him to succeed Thurgood Marshall, and he has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the Court’s second African-American justice.
Thomas has been the senior associate justice and the Court’s longest-serving member since 2018, with a tenure of 30 years and 148 days as of March 20, 2022.
Thomas grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and attended the College of the Holy Cross before attending Yale Law School. In 1974, he was hired as an assistant attorney general in Missouri, and he eventually went into private practice there.
