Clarence Gilyard was an American university professor, actor, and author who lived from December 24, 1955, to approximately November 28, 2022.
He was occasionally referred to as Clarence A. Gallyard when he performed in stage, screen, and television plays in error.

In the smash hit blockbuster movie Top Gun, Gilyard portrayed Lt. Marcus “Sundown” Williams, an F-14 Tomcat radar intercept officer. In The Karate Kid Part II from 1986, he also played a soldier.
He portrayed Theo in the movie Die Hard, a criminal computer whiz who is the only remaining bad guy. Additionally, Gilyard played Reverend Bruce Barnes in the films Left Behind: The Movie and Left Behind II: Tribulation Force.
From 1989 through 1993, Gilyard portrayed the private eye, Conrad McMasters, on the TV show Matlock with Andy Griffith. He took over for Kene Holliday, who was fired due to his drug and alcohol abuse.
