Montaez’s commitment to campaigning for change carried over into her political career. From 2002 until 2006, she was a Democratic Assemblywoman who represented California’s 39th State Assembly district with distinction. Her time in the California State Assembly allowed her to advocate for a variety of subjects that were important to her people and the state.
On August 28, 2023, the California State Assembly passed a resolution establishing January 19 as Cindy Montaez Day in appreciation of her important accomplishments. A day later, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously authorized the renaming of Pacoima Wash Natural Park to Cindy Montaez Natural Park, guaranteeing that her memory would be permanently associated with the region’s natural splendor.
Montaez began her academic path at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where her dedication to social change became clear. She joined a famous hunger strike with four other students in the spring of 1993. Their demonstration attempted to overturn Chancellor Charles E. Young’s decision to oppose the establishment of a Chicano Studies program on campus.
Their efforts gained fruit after 14 days of unyielding resolve and sacrifice with the inauguration of the César E. Chávez Center for Interdisciplinary Instruction in Chicana and Chicano Studies at UCLA. The César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, later renamed the César E. Chávez Center for Chicana and Chicano Studies, stands as a tribute to the force of activism and the university’s lasting dedication to academic diversity.
