Charles Edward Anderson Berry born October 18, 1926, was a pioneering American singer, composer, and guitarist. With most of his compositions, he refined and evolved rhythm and blues into the key aspects that made rock and roll distinctive, earning him the moniker “Father of Rock & Roll.”
Berry’s upbringing enabled him to pursue his musical interests from a young age. While still a student at Sumner High School, he gave his first public performance in 1941; he was still a student there in 1944 when he was jailed for armed robbery after robbing three shops in Kansas City, Missouri, and then stole a car at gunpoint with several pals.
According to Berry’s memoirs, his automobile broke down, so he hailed down a passing car and stole it at gunpoint with a nonfunctional revolver. He was convicted and sent to the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men at Algoa, Missouri, near Jefferson City, where he established a singing quartet and boxed.
