Christine Ellen Hynde is an American musician who was born on September 7, 1951. She is the Pretenders’ lead singer, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter. She is one of the two surviving founding members of the band, along with drummer Martin Chambers.
Hynde formed the Pretenders in 1978 along with Chambers, James Honeyman-Scott, and Pete Farndon. She has also worked on songs with performers like Frank Sinatra, Cher, and UB40. She released her debut album, Stockholm, in 2014. Hynde, a Pretender who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, was a member of the band. She took part in Live Aid in 1985.

Chrissie Hynde’s only sibling is Terry Hynde. Hynde developed an interest in vegetarianism, Eastern mysticism, and the hippie counterculture. She joined Sat. Sun. Mat. while a student at Kent State University’s Art School for three years. Mark Mothersbaugh, later of Devo Hynde, was a member of the band. Mark Mothersbaugh was also a victim of the Kent State shooting on May 4, 1970, which also claimed the lives of one of her friends’ boyfriends.
