He loved listening to “The Beatles” and attended “Christ the King Catholic” elementary school and “Shorewood High School.” Rock music helped him get over the fact that he was uncomfortable with the people around him.
Cornell is well known for his extensive songwriter catalog, nearly four-octave vocal range, and powerful vocal belting technique.
He is one of the key figures in the 1990s grunge movement. Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), and Higher Truth (2015) were his four solo studio albums; the 2011 live album Songbook; and Chris Cornell’s posthumous compilations, The Roads We Choose (2007) and Chris Cornell (2018).
He co-wrote and performed “You Know My Name,” the theme song to the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, and his song “The Keeper,” which was featured in the movie Machine Gun Preacher in 2011, earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe Award.
The charity single “The Promise,” which he wrote for the credits of the 2016 movie of the same name, was his final solo release before his death.
