Children under the age of five have been exposed to air pollution as a result of the actions of certain fishmongers at Chorkor Mantsulumli and Alomo Junction in the Ablekuma South sub-metro of the Greater Accra Region.
The fishmongers in this densely populated hamlet upset the locals by using antiquated ways to smoke fish, which frequently produces unbearable smoke.
When the 2024 Joy Clean Ghana Campaign was introduced in the neighborhood by representatives of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Public Health Department, their actions became public knowledge.
When the cops got to the neighborhood, the fishmongers were hard at work smoking fish, which was generating smoke.
Despite the heat and smoke from the open fire, some women were observed carrying their infants to and from the oven area.
The officials were accompanied by Madam Florence Kuukyi, the Public Health Director, to conduct an area inspection.
Madam Kuukyi gave her officers instructions to issue caution notes to eight offenders in order to serve as a deterrence to others.
Following the event, Madam Kuukyi stated that the Breath Accra project will be the primary subject of this year’s Joy Clean Ghana edition, which is all about air pollution.
According to her, in order to identify the hot spots, eight air quality monitoring sensors and four air quality notes have been installed at certain areas as part of the project.
Madam Kuiikyi claims that her department has identified Chorkor, Makola Market, Mambrobi, and Agbogbloshie as some of the Accra neighborhoods with high levels of household air pollution thanks to the installation of the sensors.
