He was born in Guangzhou, China. He entered the Cantonese cinema business in the 1950s at the request of his father, Cheung Wood-yau, who had achieved fame as an actor.
Chor Yuen made his cinematic debut in Madam Yun in 1954. Grass By The Lake(1959) was his first directorial job.
In the 1990s, Chor Yuen transitioned to directing television dramas before gently slipping out of the spotlight.
His most recent public appearance was in April 2018, when he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards.
