He was born in Guangzhou, China. He entered the Cantonese cinema business in the 1950s at the request of his father, Cheung Wood-yau, who had achieved fame as an actor.

In the 1990s, Chor Yuen transitioned to directing television dramas before gently slipping out of the spotlight.
