Chief Keef is the stage name of Keith Farrelle Cozart, an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer who was born on August 15, 1995. South Side Chicago high school students in the early 2010s were the first to take an interest in his music when he was still a teenager.

In 2012, American rapper Kanye West remixed Cozart’s well-known local track “I Don’t Like,” which went on to enter the Billboard Rap Top 20. Keef signed with Interscope as a consequence of a bidding war between major labels. The tracks “I Don’t Like” and “Love Sosa” from his first album Finally Rich, which was released in December 2012, helped to promote the Chicago rap style drill.

Chief Keef was born Keith Farrelle Cozart on August 15, 1995, in Chicago, Illinois, to Lolita Carter, a 15-year-old unmarried woman. His father has been identified as Alfonso Cozart. He was given the name Keith Carter in memory of his late uncle, “Big Keef.”

He resided in the Parkway Garden Homes, a stronghold for the Black Disciples street gang, of which Chief Keef is a member, in the Washington Park area on the city’s South Side.

Since he was a young child, Chief Keef has been alienated from his biological father, Alfonso Cozart.

He resided in Chicago with his grandmother, who was his legal guardian. He started rapping when he was five years old, recording his songs on tapes and his mother’s karaoke machine. Chief Keef attended the Banner School, a therapeutic day school, and Dulles Elementary School as a youngster. At the age of 15, he left Dyett High School.
