Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea’s head coach, has been fired, the team has confirmed.
The latest blow in a shaky season for the Blues came on Tuesday night when Dinamo
Zagreb defeated them 1-0 in the Champions League.
Following the match in Croatia, Tuchel said that his team had once again underperformed, implying that all of his players’ skillsets were inadequate.
There seemed to be little prospect of the German being removed of his duties given the club’s extensive transfer market spending and Tuchel’s freedom to have a significant say in new hires.
Tuchel’s tenure ends after 100 games, but Chelsea revealed on Wednesday morning that they had decided to part ways with him.
“Chelsea Football Club has today parted ways with Head Coach Thomas Tuchel,” said a club statement.
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.
“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.
“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.”
Chelsea won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup the next season, but it had been a poor year overall due to Chelsea’s inability to contend for the Premier League crown and their losses in the EFL Cup and FA Cup finals on penalties.
