Charles Gurumukh Sobhraj Hotchand Bhawnani is his complete name. His parents are Tran Loang Phun and Sobhraj Hatchard Bavani. He was born on April 6, 1944.
He preyed on Western tourists travelling the hippy route to South Asia in the 1970s as a serial killer, con man, and robber from France. Charles Sobhraj perpetrated multiple killings in Asia in the 1970s.
Charles Sobhraj was known as “The Serpent” because of his propensity for evading the law. He was arrested multiple times and managed to break out of prison in a number of different countries.
Charles Sobhraj was apprehended by the Nepal Police in 2003, and for the 1975 murder of an American citizen in Nepal, he received a life sentence. On December 21, 2022, Nepal’s highest court issued an order releasing him due to his advanced age and failing health.
