Martin Charles Scorsese was born in Queens, New York City, on November 17, 1942, to Catherine Scorsese (née Cappa) and Charles Scorsese, both of whom worked in Manhattan’s garment sector and whose families were originally from Palermo, Sicily.
He grew up in the Little Italy district, which served as the basis for numerous of his films. Scorsese graduated from New York University’s School of Film with a B.S. in film communications in 1964 and an M.A. in the same subject in 1966.
During this time, he directed his first feature film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door?, as well as numerous award-winning short films, including The Big Shave (1967).
He worked on the documentary Woodstock (1970) as an editor and assistant director, and he received praise from critics and the general public with Mean Streets (1973), which introduced him to actor and regular collaborator Robert De Niro.
