Charles Stewart Parnell (27 June 1846 – 6 October 1891) was an Irish nationalist politician who also led the Home Rule League from 1880 to 1882 and the Irish Parliamentary Party from 1882 to 1891.

Charles was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1875 to 1891.

His party held on to a slender majority in the House of Commons throughout the Home Rule debates of 1885–1886.

In 1879, Parnell helped found the Irish National Land League as a supporter of land reform. In County Wicklow, Parnell was born into a prominent Anglo-Irish Protestant landowning family.

By combining constitutional, radical, and economic issues and by using parliamentary process deftly, Parnell rose to become leader of the Home Rule League, which operated independently of the Liberal Party.

When Parnell quit taking violent extra-parliamentary action, he was allowed to leave Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, where he had been detained since 1882.

The Home Rule League was transformed into the Irish Parliamentary Party in the same year, which Parnell closely governed as Britain’s first organized democratic party.
