Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley announced their divorce on Wednesday, posting a joint statement on their social media pages.
“After a time of separation, the two of us decided to separate ways. “We made this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together,” said the statement shared on their Instagram stories. “God has given us with two lovely girls whom we will continue to nurture together. We humbly request privacy and respect while we make this change.”
The pair, who married in 2019, has two children: Kensli, 7, and Marli, 4.
In March 2019, the rapper, real name Chancelor Bennett, tweeted about how they met in honor of their wedding.
According to him, he was nine years old in 2003 when he, his mother, father, and brother went to an office party for the real estate firm where his mother worked.
There, three young ladies, including his future bride, performed a Destiny’s Child song, and the rapper said he locked eyes “with the prettiest girl I (have) ever seen in my almost-a-decade of life on earth.”
While his father pushed him to show off his own talents, the future Grammy-winner refused to share the stage with Kirsten because he was bashful, preferring to retreat “to the back of the crowd and never even introducing myself.”
“16 years later, it is occurring. “This [weekend] is the time, and the venue is my wedding,” he wrote in 2019. “I’m gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny.”
