Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, a leading ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Israel, died on Friday at the age of 94.

After Kanievsky fell, medics were dispatched to his home in Bnei Brak and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him.

Kanievsky, a son of rabbinical dynasties recognized for his exceptional Talmud studies, was a tremendously powerful leader of the non-Hasidic Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox group in Israel, with hundreds of thousands of adherents.

Just before the Jewish Sabbath, when the country essentially shuts down and observant Jews turn off their phones, his death was extensively reported by Israeli media.
