The Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) at the University of Ghana recently recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to empowering women leaders in academia.

Established in 2005, the Centre has been instrumental in promoting gender equity within the University community, with a focus on mentorship.

Through the formation of a Mentoring Committee, the Centre has successfully supervised the progress of members, resulting in a noticeable increase in women leaders participating in key decision-making and policy implementation on campus. In an effort to support the African Women’s Development Fund and celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, an event was organized to honor those who advocate for women’s advancement.

During the ceremony held at UG’s ISSER Conference Hall, 32 nominations for exceptional mentors were accepted and celebrated. The mentees expressed their gratitude for the support and guidance provided by their mentors in preparing them for the challenges of the world. Each mentor was presented with plaques and gift baskets as a token of appreciation.

Beatrice Boakye-Yiadom, Grants Manager at the African Women’s Development Fund, commended the event, emphasizing the importance of investing in women’s rights movements in Africa. She expressed joy in joining CEGENSA to honor distinguished women leaders and mentors within the university community.

The event theme, ‘Empowering Women Academics and Accelerating Their Progress In A Changing World,’ highlighted the significance of supporting and uplifting women in academia.
