Coughlan began his singing journey in the late 1970s. His compositions focus on politics, the intense side of relationships, and the twists between both; utilizing imagery, and literary and historical quotations. 
As a solo musician, he finished off six albums, the last being 2021’s Song Of Co-Aklan. Most of these featured a line-up known as Grand Necropolitan, featuring Nick Allum and several equally talented singers. For a moment, he became involved in musical theatre around Europe.

Coughlan said little about his children, parents, or family during his career.

In 2006 he was described in popular magazines as the ‘genius of Irish rock’. He was the subject of the documentary ‘The Adventures of Flannery’ which had screenings in Cork, Belfast, Dublin, and further away.

He also uses a variety of musical and visual styles, including neo-classics, rock, theatre, and folk music.
