After 17 minutes, Jameiro Monteiro stunned Ghana by taking advantage of a rebound to give Cape Verde the lead.

The substitution changed the game’s outcome, bringing the score to 2-1, just when it looked like a draw would occur.

In the last moments of extra time in Cape Verde’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener against Ghana, Gary Rodrigues scored.

The forward was first to react to a long-range shot from Ryan Mendes, which caused Richard Ofori to spill.

After taking the lead, the Blue Sharks continued to press Ghana, but the Black Stars presented a threat in the final third of the game.

Majeed Ashimeru’s incredible strike was disallowed for offside after it was determined that Ransford-Yeboah had obstructed the goalkeeper’s view, preventing him from scoring his first goal for the national team.

Ghana was down by halftime, much to the Islanders’ delight. Following the interval, Djiku’s equalizer gave Chris Hughton’s team the incentive they so richly deserved.

Finally, Fenerbahce’s central defender converted a corner from Jordan Ayew to tie the game. Once more, Djiku prevented the game’s end with two vital goal-saving clearances that kept the Black Stars in it.

Ofori was required to make two saves in the final ten minutes of play to deny Cape Verde. However, following a thoughtless defensive play by the Black Stars, Cape Verde regained the lead and humiliated Ghana. Ghana will try to exact revenge on Egypt in their upcoming game on January 18.
