His wrestling career started in high school. He competed as a rookie for the school wrestling team. After graduation, he enlisted and joined the Marines. His unruly behavior and inability to follow direct orders got him dishonorably discharged from the Marines.
In the year 2000, Orton made his professional wrestling debut at the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling. He was trained by Sam Muchnick and his father, Bob Orton Jr., of the famed St. Louis Wrestling Club.
