The 51-year-old is a federal appeals judge on the D.C. Circuit Court and has previously worked as a federal district judge, and a public defender,  on the Judicial Commission.

Jackson will succeed Justice Stephen Breyer, the second-longest serving Supreme Court justice, who she formerly clerked for.

He will retire from the Court at the end of his current term later in June this year. Jackson will not be sworn in as a justice until after Breyer has formally retired.

For seven years, Ketanji fueled her musical curiosity with piano lessons at the Miami Oratorio Society under the tutelage of the late Victor Kelly.

She is quite skilled at the piano and still performs certain songs for family members on occasions.
