The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has issued a statement urging the national leadership of pre-tertiary teacher unions to calm their members who are currently in a state of agitation.
The Commission emphasized that the ongoing unrest among teachers goes against the negotiated agreement between the government and their union leaders.
Ben Arthur, the Chief Executive Officer of the FWSC, emphasized the need for the teachers’ leaders to bring order among their members during an exclusive interview with our labor correspondent, Daniel Opoku in Accra on May 7, 2024.
Arthur stated that the Commission has already made decisions on most of the teachers’ demands. He expressed his disappointment in the regional executives for making public statements that undermine their national leadership. He believes that striking is not always the best approach to resolving issues.
The CEO of the FWSC pointed out the mutual interest of all parties involved, which is to move the country forward. He called on the national executives of the teachers’ unions to communicate the outcomes of their recent meeting to their members.
The unrest among pre-tertiary teacher unions started with a demonstration on Friday, May 3, demanding the implementation of their approved conditions of service. The following Monday, teachers across the country continued to voice their concerns.
Thomas Musah Tanko, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), appealed to the government to intervene in the situation.
The FWSC CEO reminded all parties involved that the ultimate goal is progress for the country. It is important for both the government and the teachers to work together towards a resolution that benefits all.
