Despite losing 2-1 to Nigeria Rivers United in their final Group C match of the CAF Confederation Cup yesterday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Port Harcourt, Ghana’s Dreams FC have secured their spot in the quarterfinals.
Dreams secured the top spot in the group table with 12 points following Club Africain’s home loss to Academica do Lobito, who are currently in last place.
In the 39th minute, Abdul Aziz Issah’s goal gave Dreams FC the lead, which they maintained until halftime.
But Rivers United equalized after the half and added a late winner to give the home team a 2-1 victory.
The Group C final games saw a thrilling conclusion as Tunisia’s Club Africain and Angola’s Academica do Lobito drew 1-1.
The Ghanaian FA Cup winners needed just a point from their final Group C match to advance to the continental competition’s quarterfinals after winning four of their five group games, including a first-leg victory over Rivers United in Kumasi.
Dreams FC hopes to become the second Ghanaian club to win the CAF Confederation Cup, after Hearts of Oak, with a quarterfinal spot in the first continental campaign.
Additionally qualified are Rivers United, who had nine points from five games played before the match, good for third place on the Group C table.
