The Young Africans’ victory over CD Belouizdad in Tanzania on Saturday put an end to Medeama SC’s hopes of making it to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
Two days prior, Yanga and Belouizdad’s draw would have allowed the Ghanaian champions to remain in the competition after Medeama’s defeat to Al Ahly.
After a fantastic CAF Champions League campaign, Medeama will travel to Algeria for the group stage’s last match in the hopes of finishing third.
A minute after the half, Stephane Aziz Ki doubled the lead for the home team in a one-sided match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, which was opened by Yahia Abass in the 43rd minute.
Kennedy Musonda of Zambia increased the lead after two minutes, and with six minutes left, Joseph Gnadou completed the victory.
In the 77th minute, Augustine Okrah, a forward from Ghana, took Maxi Mpia Nzengeli’s place.
Al Ahly and Young Africans advance from the group as quarterfinalists after sharing first and second place, respectively.
