Popular South African politician Butana Komphela has been confirmed dead. He passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022. He was 65.

Komphela served as MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the province, as well as that of Health at an earlier stage, while nationally he served as the National Assembly sports committee chairman.

In November 2021, a Brandfort Magistrate’s Court sentenced Komphela to three years’ imprisonment suspended for five years on the condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offense during the period of suspension.

Magistrate Riaas Hanware sentenced Komphela after finding him guilty of culpable homicide for his involvement in an accident that claimed the life of Samuel Manyova (50).

On January 6, 2019, Komphela was driving his BMW from Theunissen to Bloemfontein.

The car reportedly veered to the right, crossing the two barrier lines to collide with a Volkswagen Polo that was driving in the opposite direction.

The Polo, carrying five occupants, rolled several times and Manyova, one of the passengers, died at the scene. The other occupants survived with minor injuries.
