Businessman on GH₵50k bail over visa fraud

A businessman has been charged with defrauding a woman of $5,000 while pretending to be obtaining her a German visa. An Accra Circuit Court has given him GH₵50,000 bail with two sureties.

Faisal Moro Mohammed, 31, denied violating the mutual trust between the two and deceiving Madam Mercy Sarfo. In 2024, on February 29, Faisal will return to the Court.

Madam Mercy, the complainant, was a shopkeeper who lived in Odorkor, according to Police Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, while Faisal, the accused, was a businessman who lived in Dansoman. The court was presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.

He said that in 2020, the complainant was introduced to the accused by a travel agent named Alhaji Razak. On May 4, 2023, the complainant received a call from Alhaji Razak informing her that there was another opportunity to travel to Germany via Greece and that the entire package, including her passport and documentation, would cost USD 7,000.

According to Chief Inspector Danku, Alhaji told the complainant that to get a visa, she had to come to Nigeria within three days.

The accused, Faisal, called the complainant, who was intrigued. With plans to obtain German visas in three days, Faisal declared his intention to travel to Nigeria with passengers.

Together with other clients, the complainant and Faisal left Aflao station for Nigeria on May 5, 2023. To start the visa application procedure, Faisal needed $2000 and the complainant’s Ghanaian passport.

He then asked for an extra $3000, which made the complainant turn to a witness in Ghana for assistance. On May 6, 2023, Faisal got in touch with Mohammed, a dispatch rider, who picked up the $3,000.

Faisal did not obtain the complainant’s visa; hence, the complaint spent two months in Nigeria before leaving for Ghana, even though he admitted collecting the monies in Nigeria and collected an extra GHC2,000.00 as a visa cost.

Faisal took responsibility for the charges during the investigation and begged for more time to give the complainant her money back. This lawsuit demonstrates the defendant’s dishonesty in making false promises regarding visa services and then failing to fulfill them, which resulted in legal repercussions.
