Achimota Circuit Court has heard arguments from a 33-year-old businessman who purportedly took $57,000 in an attempt to obtain a Toyota Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle for a church, but ultimately failed.

Andrews Amoah Ampaw entered a not guilty plea to the fraud by false pretenses charge.

According to the police, the Ampaw was detained by Ghana Immigration Service officers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) while on a foreign trip.

Ampaw was granted bail in the amount of GHC 800,000 by the Isaac Addo-presiding court, with two sureties who had to provide proof of their landed property.

In addition, it mandated that Ampaw turn in his passport to the court registry unless instructed otherwise.

Additionally, he was required to report each Friday to the case investigator.

The complainant, whose identity was concealed, is a clergyman and an administrator at a well-known church in the nation, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Ahiale.

Ampaw dwells in Weija SCC in Accra, according to ASP Ahiale.

Under the false pretense of obtaining a 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser from Dubai for the church, Ampaw attempted to obtain $57,000 in cash from the complaint on June 29, 2023, but was unable to fulfill their request.

According to the prosecution, Ampaw fled and it was impossible to find him or get the money back.

Information obtained on February 12, 2024, suggested that Ampaw was traveling outside the nation when he was detained by immigration officers at KIA and turned over to Legon Police in a related incident.

According to the prosecutor, Ampaw was recognized by the complainant upon his capture.

In his caution statement, Ampaw allegedly acknowledged the offense during questioning, according to the prosecution.
