Yesterday (May 1st, 2023) which was actually a statutory holiday, a sad incident occurred in Madina which got massive attention from the press.
A building that was still under construction came down unannounced leading to some of the workers on site being trapped.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Archibald Cobbina, has made shocking revelations concerning the collapse of the building at Adenta West, Madina after he made his inspection.
According to the honorable figure, this occurrence was strictly due to the use of inferior building materials in the edifice.
Per his views during his visit to the site, he observed that the construction materials used were of pretty low standards, and the owner of the building was as well in a haste to complete the project in a very short period.
In addition to his observations, Mr.Cobbina vehemently expressed his concerns about people constructing buildings without proper permits and emphasized that people must go through the rightful channels when planning to put up such housing projects.
Also reports reaching us on Monday evening, claimed one person was trapped under the rubble, as reported by Francis-Xavier Sosu, the area’s Member of Parliament.
Viral footage showed the Ghana National Fire Service, police, and NADMO officials using earth-moving equipment and other tools to rescue some of the trapped workers as well as remove iron rods and other building materials from the site.
The collapse highlights the importance of using high-quality materials in construction and obtaining proper permits before beginning any building projects. It also underscores the need for individuals to prioritize safety over speed when constructing buildings.
The authorities with the mandate must ensure that building codes and regulations are enforced to prevent such incidents from happening in the future since this occurrence has been on the increase lately.
