Matthew Ryan Araiza, popularly known as Matt Araiza, is an American football punter for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League. He played college football at San Diego State. He is nicknamed “Punt God” for his ability to punt the football 70 to 80 yards.
Matt is of Mexican descent through his father, Rico, who was born in Mexico. Araiza has stated that he does not necessarily love the nickname” of ‘Punt God’, though recognizes it as a “huge compliment.
Matt Araiza, along with one former and one current San Diego State football player, has been accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl at a house party in 2021, according to a civil lawsuit filed this week, per the Los Angeles Times.
Matt was one of the top punters in college football last season. He is accused of having sex with a high-school senior outside of an off-campus party and then bringing her into a room where she was raped repeatedly. The other men named in the suit are Zavier Leonard and Nowlin Pa’a Ewaliko.
Matt’s attorney, Kerry Armstrong, claims that the allegations are fouls. “It’s a shakedown because he’s now with the Buffalo Bills,” Armstrong said. “There is no doubt in my mind that Matt Araiza never raped that girl,” he added.
The Buffalo Bills released a statement to the Los Angeles Times saying they are aware of the situation but did not want to offer comment.
“We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021,” the Bills said in a statement Thursday. “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil case, we will have no other comment at this point.”
