On September 23, 1949, Joseph Springsteen Bruce Frederick was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, in the United States. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, was of Irish and Dutch descent and worked as a bus driver. His mother, Adele Ann (Zerilli), was of Italian ancestry and employed as a legal secretary.

Pamela Springsteen is his younger sister; Virginia is his older sister. Bruce was brought up as a Catholic. When he saw Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show when he was seven years old, he was motivated to pursue music (1948). He spent $18 on his first guitar when he was thirteen. When Bruce was 16 years old, his mother took out a loan and spent $60 for a Kent guitar for him.

With his New Jersey-based bandmates, who would later become known as “The E Street Band,” he inked a record deal with Columbia Records in 1972 and together they issued their debut album, “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.” in January 1973. Both the album and their follow-up, “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle,” which was released in September 1973, received positive reviews from critics but received little economic success. After more than 14 months of recording, the band’s third album, “Born to Run,” was released in 1975. It was a critical and commercial success for Springsteen and the band.
