The city of Gaithersburg announced on Tuesday that Bruce Goldensohn, the mayor from 1978 to 1986, had died at the age of 79.
Goldensohn died Sunday as a result of a stroke, according to his obituary. From 1972 to 1975, Goldensohn was a member of the Planning Commission of Gaithersburg, Maryland.
According to a press release, Goldensohn served on the Gaithersburg Planning Commission from 1972 to 1975, then on the City Council from 1976 to 1978, before serving two four-year terms as mayor.
According to the press release, during Goldensohn’s tenure as mayor, the city grew by more than 30% and annexed land that became Quince Orchard Park, the AstraZeneca site, and the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.
Following his tenure as mayor, Goldensohn served on the Montgomery County Board of Education from 1986 to 1990.
