Brian Stableford was up in Shipley, Yorkshire, and attended the University of York to earn a degree in biology in 1969. She then pursued doctoral studies in both biology and sociology. He was awarded a PhD in 1979, with a thesis focused on The Sociology of Science Fiction.
He was employed by the University of Reading as a sociology instructor until 1988. Later on in life, he worked as a full-time writer and lectured part-time in several institutions on topics including creative writing. He has a son and a daughter from his first marriage, which he had twice.
